2001, Drawing, Ink and tea on torn paper and black card, 640 x 370 mm.
Guiseppe Archimboldo style protrait or 'composite head'. Archimboldo (1530-1593) was an Italian mannerist painter and a student of Leonardo Da Vinci. His portraits often focused on a paticular element, season, or theme of nature like earth, summer, water.
This work is made up of various sketches of skulls and bones of different animals, pieced together to resemble a face. The torn tissue paper was layered onto the black card, the detail then drawn in with black ink and pen, then lastly stained the paper with tea to give it depth.
